Hundreds of thousands of corona vaccines from manufacturer Novavax threaten to remain on the shelf because there is hardly any enthusiasm for them, writes the daily Fidelity† 840,000 doses were bought and delivered, but less than a thousand shots have been taken so far.
The Ministry of Health does not want to say how much has been paid for the vaccines, but according to Trouw, the total delivery will probably amount to about 15 million euros. The ministry told the newspaper that 840,000 doses had been purchased to ensure sufficient doses would be available for 2022 and 2023. But according to Trouw, the shelf life of the doses already expires on August 31 of this year.

The Novavax vaccine was purchased to offer an alternative to people who do not want to be vaccinated with a so-called mRNA vaccine, such as that of Pfizer or Moderna. Where an mRNA vaccine contains artificial genetic material that ensures that human cells produce the spike protein of the coronavirus themselves, the Novavax vaccine injects this spike protein directly.
Since March 11, people can make an appointment for a Novavax vaccination. To date, 655 people have been vaccinated and there are still 329 appointments.
In order not to be left with the thousands of doses, the ministry has decided to make 420,000 Novavax doses available for donation to other countries. It is questionable whether this will succeed, since the supply of vaccines in other countries has also increased.
