In order to boost public confidence in the controversial AstraZeneca vaccine, the President of Lithuania, the Seimas and members of the government have been included in the list of priority vaccination groups by order of the Minister of Health and have been vaccinated since the beginning of this week.

On Monday, President Gitans Nausēda, Prime Minister Ingrīda Šimonīte, Speaker of the Seimas Viktorija Čmilīte-Nilsen and Minister of Health Arūns Duļķis have already received the vaccination, but on Tuesday the vaccination of members of the leadership and deputies of the Seimas has started. So far, 32 members of parliament have registered for the vaccination, some have contracted Covid-19, some have been vaccinated in the past because they belong to risk groups, and others have been urged by the speaker to apply for the vaccine.

The Lithuanian Seimas has a total of 141 deputies. They will be able to get vaccinated by the end of this week.

On Tuesday, deputies returned to work in the parliament building.

“We are already working in person today, we are also planning a face-to-face meeting on Thursday, because a secret ballot is planned, so we will have to get together. The Seimas board will decide tomorrow, but we will probably work here unless the situation worsens, but I hope it doesn’t happen, in addition, part of the lawsuits will have received at least the first pot, “Čmilīte-Nilsena told reporters.

The AstraZeneca vaccine has already been reported to be suspended in Lithuania a week ago due to concerns that it could promote blood clots, but resumed on Friday as the European Medicines Agency found the vaccine, developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University, to be safe and effective. .

In addition, by order of the Minister of Health, the President, the Seimas and members of the government were included in the list of priority persons to be vaccinated.

The country also has a new procedure that allows vaccinees to choose the vaccine themselves, but will have to wait if the vaccine is not available.
