What is the lawn fashion and how to reduce the time spent on lawn care, experts advise.
“The lawn is the connecting link between the different elements of the environment, as if it were the background of it all. Lithuanians want that background to be flawless – a dense, even-colored lawn without weeds. However, in order to have such a lawn, you need to be prepared to pay a lot of attention to its care, because impeccable appearance and little time are incompatible things, ”says horticultural expert dr. Ingė Auželienė, writes in the report.
According to Simas Bairašauskas, a garden technology expert at Husqvarna, the beautiful appearance of the lawn does require attention and time, but its maintenance can be facilitated by properly selected modern equipment.
“We all know the saying that the grass is greener next door. In fact, many like to compare their lawns to neighbors and, if you notice an advantage in favor of the latter, are interested in what the neighbors are doing to make their lawns so beautiful. This is one of the main reasons for deciding to buy a robotic lawnmower – because one has a neighbor whose lawn looks flawless. According to a representative survey conducted by Spinter tyrimai in April this year, the impeccable appearance of the lawn is most important for the youngest people, 18–25 years old. age (33%), and metropolitan residents (35.5%), and the least important is the oldest, 56 years old. and older, the group of respondents (27%) and those living in rural areas (27.5%).
The lawn is shrinking
Although Lithuanians appreciate the lawn and tend to make an effort due to its beautiful appearance, according to dr. I. Auželienė, in Lithuania there is a tendency of decreasing lawn area. More and more space is allocated to other plants on the plot – shrubs, flower beds. It happens that the owners of very small, several acres, plots give up the lawn altogether. However, lawns that divide even a small area try to ensure that it is as visible as possible.
“The favorite lawn color of the population of our country is rich green. Different lawn mixes have different shades of grass, so this should be kept in mind when choosing a mix. In the past, flowering meadows were unpopular, now more and more people have a beautiful meadow with slightly taller grass, meadow flowers. These are usually installed by homestead owners who have large lawn areas, thus solving the problem of lawn mowing. And only a few like lawns with flowering milks, dobiliuks or suns, ”comments the expert.
S. Bairašauskas notices that the lawn without extraneous plants and broadleaf weeds is the aspiration and one of the main wishes of the landowners. According to him, weeds help robotic lawnmowers to cope with weeds, because often when mowing the lawn, they simply do not have time to grow. In addition, the color of the grass cut by the lawn robots over time becomes richer, more even, there are far fewer yellowed stems, the lawn itself becomes denser, it is always the same height. The lawn is also mulched with cut grass, so it needs to be fertilized less often.

Take more care, but lack the time

People imagine that a slower growing lawn will need to be mowed less often. In fact, the opposite is true. Such mixtures form a dense turf, so the lawn needs to be mowed more often, ”she says.

“It takes about 2 hours to mow a 10-acre lawn with a lawnmower, so mowing once a week only takes about 8 hours a month to mow, and this year, when the grass is growing very fast, even more can be spent. When a lawn robot is working on the plot, this time is reduced to a minimum, as additional beautification is required unless those areas of the plot are inaccessible to the robot. Often people also complain that they have to choose the best weather for mowing the lawn when it is not raining. Lawn robots also work in the rain, so there is no need to constantly check the weather forecasts and turn your head when it is the right time to mow the lawn, ”says the interlocutor.
Lawn robots are increasingly being “employed” in rural homesteads, where a larger area needs to be maintained. S. Bairašauskas says that it does not matter for these devices whether to mow a specially sown lawn or a simple meadow grass, so the residents who go to the homesteads in their free time can actually rest and not take care of cutting the grass.
