His daughter, actress Elžbeta Latēnaite, announced the composer’s death on the night of Facebook on Wednesday.
Fausts Latēns has created music for more than 200 performances, including all productions by director Rim Tumin and several works by Eimunta Nekrošus, as well as for dozens of documentaries and feature films.
From 1989 to 1991 he was the director of the Vilnius Puppet Theater “Lele”, from 1996 – the Lithuanian State Academic Drama Theater, in 1999 and 2000 he was the Director General of the National Drama Theater, but from 2000 to 2004 together with director Rima Tumin has directed the Vilnius Small Theater. He has twice been the Lithuanian Deputy Minister of Culture, as well as the Lithuanian Cultural Attaché to Russia. In 2013, he was awarded the National Culture and Art Prize.
“He thought in the notes, he thought of life as a composition,” a composer friend, director and artistic director of the Moscow Wakhtangov Theater, Rim Tumin, who has worked closely with him for thirty years, told BNS.
At the same time, the director admitted that in Latena he was most fascinated by the “passionate desire to be a part of the theater” and they created all their performances together. “He would also have been a good, talented director,” Tumin added.
Musicologist Viktor Gerulaitis has admitted that Laten has been especially loved by the people and intellectuals of the Moscow Theater, especially at the Vahtangov Theater, where he has recently worked. Tumin said that Laten had received a lot of offers from other Russian theaters and had recently been awarded the international star “Baltic Star” in St. Petersburg.
