Fertilizers from Belarus were sent by rail to Lithuania and then from the port of Klaipeda to other countries.
The UN urges Lithuania to reconsider its decision to ban the transit of Belarusian fertilizers
The UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights points out that Lithuania’s sanctions against the transit of Belarusian fertilizers have a negative impact on food security in developing countries.
The European Union imposed sanctions on Belarusian fertilizers in February 2022, but the sanctions against them were lifted in January.
Lithuania has continued the transit ban until now, but the UN committee recommends that this decision be reviewed to ensure food availability and reduce food prices in developing countries.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs (“New Unity”), at the meeting of the General Affairs Council of the European Union (EU), called for a decision to reconcile the sanctions imposed on Belarus with restrictions on Russia, thus reducing the circumvention of sanctions.
