Lithuania advises its citizens not to travel to Belarus and called on those currently in the country to leave immediately. This was stated today by Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, quoted by Reuters.
A Belarusian fighter jet intercepted a Ryanair plane traveling from Athens to Vilnius yesterday and forced it to land in Minsk, where a Belarusian dissident journalist was detained, BTA reports.
Landsbergis told a government meeting that Belarus’ actions indicate a deteriorating security situation in the region.
All planes traveling to and from Lithuania should avoid the airspace of neighboring Belarus, Transport Minister Marius Squodis told the meeting. The ban on flights over Belarusian airspace will take effect tomorrow at 3 am.
