Lithuania temporarily suspends the work of two of the six border control points on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border from August 18. This was announced today, August 16, by the press service of the government of the republic.
It is reported that this proposal of the Ministry of Transport was approved by the government to reduce the threat on the border with Belarus. The checkpoints “Shumskas” and “Tveryachyus” (on the Belarusian side “Losha” and “Vidzy” respectively) will be closed. These points are used to pass cars, and empty trucks pass through Tveryachyus.
The Ministry of Transport and Communications of Lithuania noted that the flows will be directed through the largest border checkpoint “Medininkai” (“Stone Log”). The department believes that the situation with the queues of vehicles and the transportation of goods should not fundamentally change. At the same time, the Prime Minister of Lithuania Ingrid Shimonite stated that the closure of more than two checkpoints on the border with Belarus could adversely affect other neighboring states.
Let us recall that earlier the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Lithuania Arnoldas Abramavičius stated that the reason for the closure of the checkpoints was the presence of “about 1200 fighters of the Wagner PMC” in the Belarusian-Lithuanian border area. Initially, Vilnius planned to close the crossings from August 15, but then postponed this decision.
