Lithuania refers to consultations with Ambassador to China / Article

Lithuania has recalled its ambassador to China for consultations. It is a response to China’s decision to recall its ambassador to Lithuania in protest of plans to set up a Taiwanese representation in Vilnius. Relations between the two countries have also been worsened by Lithuania’s decision to withdraw from the “17 + 1” format of economic and political cooperation between China and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe.

Lithuanian Ambassador to China Diāna Mickevičiene will return to Vilnius for consultations on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Lithuanian Embassy in China will continue to operate as usual, the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced.

China announced on August 10 that it was recalling its ambassador to Lithuania for consultations. Beijing explained this with the Lithuanian government’s decision to allow Taiwan to open a representative office in Vilnius, using the word “Taiwan” in its name.

There are also Taiwanese representations in other European countries, but their name does not use the word “Taiwan”, but the name of the island’s capital “Taipei”.

China considers Taiwan its territory and has made no secret of its intention to regain control of the small island.
