No illegal immigrants were allowed into Lithuania for the fourth day in a row, but almost 100 people who tried to enter Lithuania illegally were forced to return to Belarus, the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service and Statistics Department said on Tuesday.
Lithuanian border guard patrols have used audio announcements in various languages, in which potential border violators are warned that it is forbidden to enter Lithuania when crossing the border in unauthorized places. Lithuanian border guards have not used service weapons, special means or physical force during the day, the border guard said in a statement.
Lithuanian border guards have used a helicopter to monitor from the air.
Lithuanian border guards have noticed that in several border sections on the Belarusian side of the border the number of border guards of this country has increased episodically, a helicopter has flown several times, as well as several shots have been heard from Belarus.
The flow of illegal migrants across the Lithuanian-Belarusian border has reportedly increased sharply recently. Since the beginning of this year, the total number of illegal immigrants apprehended has exceeded 4,000. Most illegal migrants want to enter Western European countries through Lithuania.
Lithuanian officials point out that the Belarussian regime is deliberately facilitating the flow of migrants across the border, as Lithuania supports the democratic opposition in Belarus and has given asylum to its leader Svyatlan Cihanouska.
