Lithuania celebrates Independence Day / Article / LSM.lv

In Lithuania, on Thursday, March 11, Independence Day is celebrated. 31 years ago, the Supreme Council of Lithuania adopted the Act “On the Restoration of the Independent State of Lithuania”.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the celebrations will be quieter than usual this year, but there will be a number of traditional events. The festive morning in the capital Vilnius will begin with the laying of flowers at the monument “Message” near the parliament building, but later the flags of the three Baltic States will be solemnly hoisted on Independence Square.

The ceremony, as well as the speech of the Speaker of the Seimas and the first head of the restored independent state Vytautas Landsbergs, will be broadcast on public television.

The Holy Mass at Vilnius Cathedral will thank God for the freedom given to the state, and Vilnius University student corporations are inviting them to take part in a special virtual orienteering game on Thursday. A parade of cars decorated with flags and symbols and light installations in Lithuanian cities will help maintain the feeling of togetherness, but in the evening television will broadcast two festive concerts.
