Lithuania calls for the non-use of Chinese smart devices

Don’t buy Chinese mobile phones and throw out the ones you have now. Such a statement has been issued by the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense, reports lsm.lv.

This happened after the Lithuanian National Cyber Security Center investigated several devices from Chinese manufacturers. Investigators say significant cybersecurity risks have been identified in Huawei’s and Xiaomi 5G smart devices, for example.

“The devices under investigation collect too much information about their users and their behavior. Much more than, for example, devices made in the United States or South Korea,” said Lithuanian Deputy Defense Minister Margir Abukevich.

“Chinese companies have an obligation to share data with public authorities upon request. They use the data for their own purposes,” said Lithuanian Minister of Defense Arvīds Anušausks.

The risks relate to applications installed on manufacturers’ devices, as well as to the possibility of personal data leakage and possible restrictions on freedom of expression.

In connection with the statement of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, “Xiaomi” states its position:

“Xiaomi devices do not censor incoming or outgoing user content.
Xiaomi does not and will not restrict the personal conduct of users such as
browsing the Internet, searching for information, making calls, or accessing third parties
use of communication applications. Xiaomi respects and protects everything
users’ rights and respect the General Data of the European Union
protection regulation (SBS). “
