The highlight of the festival, which is funded by the Authority for Culture and Media, is the anniversary week from May 17 to 23, 2021 with an opening event in the Hamburger Kammerspiele, at which Hamburg’s First Mayor Dr. Peter Tschentscher takes part. The festival program is now available at www.hamburgliest.de on-line. If necessary, the plans will be adapted to the current Corona regulations. Dr. Carsten Brosda, Senator for Culture and Media: “Wolfgang Borchert was a pacifist and idealist, a fighter and dreamer, a young man with big ideas and an overflowing heart. He is rightly honored on his 100th birthday in his hometown. Numerous institutions and culture makers in our city have developed a creative program despite the difficult circumstances at the moment and invite you to rediscover this Hamburg writer from a variety of perspectives. “
Wolfgang Borchert did not live to see the world premiere of “Outside in front of the door” in the Hamburger Kammerspiele – he died the day before. The great success of the play made the writer posthumously famous in Germany and the world. One reason for celebrating the opening of the anniversary week on May 17th in the Theater an der Hallerstraße. Moderated by Maike Schiller (Hamburger Abendblatt), Hamburg’s First Mayor Dr. Peter Tschentscher, Isabel Bogdan, Simone Buchholz, Matthias Politycki, Charly Hübner and Bela B Felsenheimer from Borchert’s work. Further highlights in the anniversary week are a birthday picnic on May 20 in Hayns Park and a closing event with Senator for Culture Dr. Carsten Brosda and Stefan Gwildis in the St. Pauli Theater.
The festival extends across the entire Hanseatic city and will present Borchert’s work in various formats until June 12th. In addition to readings and discussions in bookstores and in the literary house (with exiled authors, among others) as well as filmic and graphic adaptations (art clinic / history workshop Eppendorf), Stefan Gwildis offers his “Best of Borchert” program with newly set poems in the St. Pauli Theater In addition, the new permanent exhibition “Borchert-Box” is starting in the State and University Library, making the author’s estate and his study accessible to the public.
Outdoor events are also dedicated to the texts and career of Borchert. During an evening walking reading in Jenischpark, the author’s most beautiful moon poems can be heard, a harbor tour, a literary walk and a bike tour invite you to explore the author’s footsteps, and in his place of birth Eppendorf they decorate with the motto “Outside in front of the doors” Quotes from his drama house entrances. Mobile gardens are set up in front of places that were central to Borchert’s biography. With this, “Hamburg reads Borchert” shapes the cityscape in spring; numerous events revive the memory of Wolfgang Borchert.
