Since its creation in 2014, the RFI Theater Prize has introduced authors from Lebanon, Guinea, Congo, Cameroon, Benin and Haiti. Each year between 150 and 200 dramatic texts come from all the countries of the Francophonie and in all genres.

What will be the main topics covered this year? What humanity will the authors show during this edition? With what words, in what style? It is up to the artists to provide their answer. The call for writing for the 10th edition of the “RFI Theater Prize” has been open since Monday March 20, and authors have until midnight April 23, 2023 to send their texts to the address prix.theatre@rfi.fr. A dozen texts will be pre-selected for their literary and dramatic qualities and their originality, before being submitted next September to the jury’s final vote.

To participate, authors must be between 18 and 46 years old, be from and live in a country located in Africa, Indian Ocean, Caribbean (excluding Dom-Tom), Near or Middle East. The Prize is also open to foreigners from these areas, residing in France for less than 4 years and holders of a residence permit or political refugee status. Their texts must be original, unpublished in France and written in French.

The “RFI Theater Prize” will be awarded on September 24 in Limoges as part of the Les Zébrures d’Automne festival organized by “Les Francophonies – From writing to the stage”.

The objective of the Prize is to promote the richness of contemporary French-language dramatic writing from the South and to encourage the career development of young authors writing in French. RFI and its partners thus offer the winner professional support and media exposure through: a residency at the Villa Saint Louis Ndar in Senegal; a scenic creation residency on the winning text at the Center Dramatique National de Normandie-Rouen; a financial allocation allocated by the SACD; the organization and funding by the Institut français of a writing residency at the Maison des Auteurs in Limoges and in Paris with Théâtre Ouvert; promotion of the text and broadcast on RFI antennas, as well as a public reading during the cycle “Ça va, ça va le monde! », organized within the framework of the Festival of Avignon.

In 2022, Gaelle Beloved (Haiti) was named winner with Port-au-Prince and its sweet night. She thus succeeded Jean D’Amérique, Souleymane Bah, Valérie Cachard, Sedjro Giovanni Houansou, Edouard Elvis Bvouma, Hakim Bah, Hala Moughanie and Julien Mabiala Bissila.

The “RFI Theater Prize” is organized in partnership with the SACD, the French Institute, the French Institute of Senegal in Saint Louis, the Francophonies – From writing to the stage, Open Theater – National Center for Contemporary Dramaturgies, and the Center Drama National of Normandy-Rouen.
