Have you ever thought that literature can be a fundamental support for other branches of art? This is the question raised by the organizers of this year’s international cultural festival “Inkulturacija” and invite them to look at literature as a source of inspiration for other branches of art – theater, music, visual arts. On September 25-30, during the events held in the spaces of the Ieva Simonaitytė public library of Klaipėda county and its partners, participants can expect meetings with artists, writers, discussions about creativity, history, social issues and current affairs.
The program includes internationally recognized authors
The program includes more than 20 events in which 68 guests from Lithuania and foreign countries will participate: Belgium, USA, Latvia, Switzerland, Ukraine, Germany. According to program organizer Daiva Nakrošienė, the festival becomes an international platform that unites interdisciplinary arts. “We aim to become an international cultural festival, while also appreciating our own culture, heritage and community attitudes. We want different forms of art to respond to each other and to establish stronger ties with Lithuanian and foreign writers”, Daiva Nakrošienė shared her thoughts. The festival program includes meetings with internationally acclaimed writers and artists. Literary gourmands will have a unique opportunity to meet Pedro Lenz, author of the Swiss bestseller “Here I am Varatarius” and Jean-Phillippe Touissaint, a writer of minimalist novels from Belgium. Fans of fine art are welcome to a meeting with Samuel Baku, a Litvak artist living in the United States. The artist’s work touches on the theme of the Second World War in Vilnius.
From pop culture to punk rock
The festival will start on September 25. talking about pop culture. Writer Rimantas Kmita, chairman of the Klaipėda branch of the Lithuanian Artists’ Union Neringa Poškutė-Jukumienė, artist Jolita Vaitkutė, photographer Tadas Kazakevičius and journalist Rytis Zemkauskas will invite to discuss pop culture and its lasting value in art. After the discussion, the exhibition “Tai ko nebebus” by Tad Kazakevičius, a professional of documentary and portrait photography, will be presented. This exhibition will be on display in the White Gallery of the library until October 29. Ukrainian reporter Mariia Paplauskaitė will come from Ukraine and share the features of reportage literature during the festival, and Latvian director and playwright Lauris Gundaras will present Shakespeare in a different light and discuss the 17th and 21st centuries. theater parallels. The program also includes several events of the international festival of Jewish culture “Shalom visuos krastuos” – a lecture on Jewish cuisine “Beigeliai i daryta žuis: jewish cuisine and how non-Jews perceive it” and the presentation of a collection of memoirs about the theater critic Irena Veisaitė “Mūsų Irena”. Lovers of poetry and music are waiting for an exclusive event with Lithuanian National Culture and Art Prize laureate Rimvydus Stankevičius and musician, composer Oleg Ditkovskis. Biblical works in art will not be forgotten, professor Gintautas Mažeikis and Dalia Jakaitė, researcher of the interaction between Lithuanian literature and religion, will talk about them. During the festival, questions will also be raised about the significance of Simon Dach for Klaipėda, based on the German scholar Axel E. Walter’s monograph “Prussian Orpheus. Simon Dach’s self-concept and cultural reception”. September 30 the festival will be crowned by the concert of the punk rock group “Arklio galia”.
The festival expands the territory
This is not the first year that the festival takes place not only in the Ieva Simonaitytė public library of Klaipėda county, but also in partner spaces. This year is no exception, as a talk about Eimuntas Nekrošiai and Audronis Liuga’s documentary film “Moving the Horizon” is scheduled to be held at the Klaipėda Drama Theater (Teatro st. 2), and the book “The Drummer’s Diaries” by Vladimir Terasov will be held at the jazz club “Kurpiai” (Kurpiai st. 1A) presentation with musical improvisations by V. Terasov and V. Ančeris, breakfast with the Swiss writer Pedrus Lenz awaits at the coffee studio “Kavos architektai” (H. Manto st. 25), and rock bands at the “Herkus Kantas” bar (Naujoji uosto st. 3) “Horse Power” closing concert.
Traditional book fair
On September 29 and 30, book lovers are invited to the traditional XI Klaipėda Book Fair. During it, Klaipėda residents and city guests will be able to purchase the books they want from both small and large publishers. “The Klaipėda Book Fair, which started eleven years ago, has grown and become an international cultural festival that brings together writers and artists not only from Lithuania, but also from foreign countries. Although the festival is changing and more attention is paid to the cultural program, we follow the tradition and every year we invite publishers to present the works published by their publishing house to the public. We are creating a celebration for all lovers of literature”, shared the thoughts of Klaipėda County Ieva Simonaitytė Public Library director Dr. Laura Juchnevich.
For the first time in the history of the festival, “Shauklys” will be selected
The organizers invite the public to actively share the moments of the festival “Inculturacija” – records, photos, videos on social media by tagging them with hashtags – #inkulturacija or #INKTR2023. The participant who marked the festival the most in his social media will be awarded a bright memory award in the name of Laima Pačebutienė – a sculpture created by Klaipėda artist Daiva Ložytė. Both individuals and legal entities can share festival moments. The winner will be announced on October 10. The organizers of the festival will contact you personally to collect the prize.
