“Listen to the question, man”: Iván Cancino’s scolding Diego Cadena in the middle of his statement to the Prosecutor’s Office for the Uribe case

Iván Cancino is Diego Cadena’s lawyer.

This Thursday, March 18, the file that the prosecutor’s office Gabriel Jaimes has was revealed and with which he will seek that a judge preclude the investigation that is being carried out against former president Álvaro Uribe. In that folio of evidence to which El Espectador and Blu Radio had accesshighlighted the statement delivered by Diego Cadena, who served as Uribe’s lawyer, before the Prosecutor’s Office.

In the diligence that took place on February 24 in the city of Cali, Cadena attended with his lawyer Iván Cancino, to be questioned again about his role in this process for alleged manipulation of witnesses since he is also accused.

In one part of the questioning, the lawyer Cancino got upset with Cadena because he allegedly did not pay attention to what they asked him and ended up answering a question in the wrong way about the witnesses in the Uribe case.

“You presented these witnesses to the processes that were being processed”asked the prosecutor, to which Cadena answered “yes”, the agent countered: “everything”, to which Cadena answered “some.” Immediately, his lawyer gets agitated, takes off his mask and says: “Listen to the question man” and he looks very annoyed.

Chain then repeats: “What if I presented the witnesses?”, and Cancino repeats: “the question is that if you presented the witnesses, listen.” Finally Cadena changes his answer and says no.

The scene already sowed doubts about the diligence since after this mishap, the prosecutor and the attorney present at that time, they advise Cadena to consult the lawyer when in doubt. “It would make no sense for your lawyer to accompany you if you cannot consult him”said the prosecutor.

Blu Radio presented this recording together with El Espectador, in which Cadena also reported that his job as a lawyer for former senator Uribe consisted of verifying the information that the politician gave him: “Let them tell the truth even if it hurts me, Uribe told me, and used a phrase: tell the country the truth. I collected the information and gave it to Dr. Uribe or his former adviser Fabián Rojas [quien hizo parte de la Unidad de Trabajo Legislativo de Uribe mientras este estuvo en el Senado] so that they would give him the corresponding destination ”.

Elsewhere, Cadena again answered the wrong way. “Was the search for witnesses agreed?” asked the prosecutor. “Yes, correct”, replied Cadena, which made Cancino react again: “Be careful with the question, you have to understand the literal: did you remember to look for witnesses, find them?” “No,” Cadena said. “I ask you the favor of thinking about the question before answering, the objective is to clarify, but the least I want is for you (inaudible),” the prosecutor told Diego Cadena. The judicial officer insisted on the question, and this time, Cadena replied: “I abstain, I can simply tell you that information was being verified.”

In addition to this statement, among the evidence collected by the Prosecutor’s Office to request the preclusion of the case against the former president, according to both media, the accusatory body was not successful in determining or discovering valuable information in the sim cards seized from Juan Guillermo Monsalve and with whom he spoke on the phone from the La Picota Prison.
