The 23-year-old Macháč will go to the event one more time on Tuesday. Together with Adam Pavlásek, they will face Nicolás Jarry and Alejandro Tabilo from Chile in doubles. Wimbledon winner Barbora Krejčíková is fighting to advance to the quarterfinals of the singles, who faces Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina, and then she will face Kateřina Siniaková in the doubles.
Macháč, a native of Beroun, entered the match against Zverev well and won a break in the first game. But he immediately lost the advantage and did not fight for the next break point. In the sixth game, Zverev broke the Czech player’s serve once more and served out the set.
Zverev also won the opening of the second set, in which he took a 2-0 lead. During Macháč’s next serve at 30:15, he claimed an out, but he did not convince the umpire. The Czech representative then equalized.
The decisive moment came in the 11th game, when Macháč first won the serve with a clean game and then Zverev served the duel in the same way. He thus avenged Macháč’s elimination from the mixed doubles on Monday. The Czech player finished in the 2nd round of the Olympic tournament for the second time in a row, he was also eliminated at the same stage three years ago in Tokyo.
Olympic debutant Menšík resisted the favored Paul only at the beginning of the first set. Starting at 3-3, he lost the remaining nine of ten games and lost the duel in one hour and 11 minutes. He also paid for 26 unforced errors.
