The Palestinian-Canadian artist is in this week’s (November 11) edition of The covera renewal of ZikNationto support emerging talents across the world on a weekly basis. Each week, an emerging artist will appear on The cover – you can read Nemahsis’ profile here, written by Zoya Raza-Sheikh and featuring photography by Norman Wong.
The cover is accompanied by an exclusive playlist curated by Nemahsis. She chose tracks like Imogen Heap, Sigur Rós, Panic! At The Disco, Billy Joel, Lorde and Mk.gee, among others, for a playlist called ‘A Motion Sickness You Can’t Hurl Off’. Listen to the full playlist on Spotify below and on Apple Music.
In The coverNemahsis talks about the discrimination she faced throughout her life – both as an artist and as a child. “I was bullied a lot at school,” she recalls. “No one would want to sit next to me because I was ‘dirty’ or ‘contagious.’ I always had to defend myself. It’s all I’ve ever known.
The musician also explained the idea behind the title of her debut album, “Verbathim,” linking it to the way she was treated by the music industry after the events of October 7, 2023. “It was biblical and like someone (was) holding my tongue,” she explains. “I wanted (the title) to be like someone caught my tongue saying ‘verbatim’. This will be historic, especially when Palestine is free.”
