Thirty years ago, the three Baltic states came together in a living chain of people, holding hands and standing by more than two million people, thus resisting the occupation and oppression of the Soviet Union. The song in honor of this historical event – the Anthem of the Awakening “The Awakening of the Baltics” – has now been reborn in a new performance.
The idea for this song about the brotherhood and unity of nations to breathe new life came to the poetess Agne Sabulite and producer and event organizer Alkas Paltarokas. The version of the song they offer, which is now performed by opera soloists and chamber musicians, takes them back to August 23, 1989, when three nations as one stood in public protest against the occupation. The video of the song uses unique footage from the Lithuanian Radio and Television Archives, as well as rare pictures from the Genocide Center.
“The Baltic Way is an endless expression of our nation’s strength and devotion to freedom, and on its 30th anniversary we wanted to create something special and unique that would evoke the emotions and unity that united three nations for one goal,” says the authors of the new interpretation. .
The new version of the composition has also been praised by the authors of the original song. According to composer Boris Reznik, he was surprised by the artistic solution and the way of teaching, which, in his opinion, is one of the best interpretations of the composition he has heard. On the other hand, the poet Valdis Pavlovskis, who created the Latvian version of the song, admitted that the new song shook him: “It is good to listen to this re-born song in Lithuania. The sensitive accompaniment and emotional performance of the chamber ensemble shook the emotions, the sermons went through the bones, especially hearing the Latvian verse of the song. Listening gives the impression that in 30 years, the feeling of brotherhood has not disappeared between our nations. ”
