Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Scientists from the UK’s leading university, Oxford, bring the latest good news regarding the transmission of the omicron variant of the corona virus and also the Covid-19 pandemic. He said that the terrible picture of the severity of Covid-19 had been passed by humans.
In an interview with BBC Radio 4, Professor of Medicine at the University of Oxford and adviser to the British government on science John Bell said that, despite the current fear of the omicron variant, the collapse of health facilities is unlikely to be repeated. This was driven by the Covid-19 vaccination that was carried out.
“The incidence of severity and death from this disease (Covid) has basically not changed since we’ve all been vaccinated and that’s very important to remember,” he said.
“This Omicron doesn’t appear to be too severe, and many people spend a relatively short time in hospital, they don’t need high-flow oxygen, the average length of stay seems to be three days. It’s not the same disease we saw a year ago. .”
Even so, he also emphasized that the world community must always be vigilant. Because, there is still a possibility that Covid-19 will again cause seriousness to health facilities and bring severe symptoms in the future.
“The horrific scenes we saw a year ago, intensive care units full and a lot of people dying prematurely, that’s now history in my view and I think we have to be reassured that it’s likely to continue,” he added.
So far, several studies have shown that Omicron’s Covid-19 is not so severe. In a recent study conducted by Imperial College London it was confirmed that the risk of hospitalization after the variant infection was approximately 40% to 45%. It is much lower than the Delta Variant.
Meanwhile, hThe results of the University of Edinburgh study also concluded that patients infected with Omicron Covid-19 but who were fully vaccinated had an 80% lower chance of being hospitalized compared to Delta infection.
