Suara.com – The Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) has granted an emergency use permit for Sinovac’s COVID-19 Coronavac vaccine to be given to children aged 6 years and over.
In response to this, Dr. Piprim Basarah Yanuarso, SpA(K), General Chairperson of the Central Executive Indonesian Pediatrician Association, issue the latest recommendations that are important for parents to know,
“This latest recommendation is issued because children can also be infected and or transmit the corona virus from and to adults around them (parents, other people who live in the same house, people who come to the house, friends or teachers at school in face-to-face learning) even if they are asymptomatic, ” said Dr. Piprim, in a press release received by Suara.com.
“In addition, there are a number of reports from the results of face-to-face learning from several countries in the world which state an increase in hospitalization cases for pediatric patients with COVID-19,” he added.

Data from the National COVID-19 Task Force as of November 1, 2021, the proportion of child cases infected with COVID-19 is 13 percent.
Therefore, the Indonesian Pediatrician Association recommends a number of things. First, the immunization of COVID-19 Coronavac in children aged 6 years was given intramuscularly at a dose of 3ug (0.5 ml) twice with the first dose to the second dose being 4 weeks apart.
Second, this vaccination is not recommended for children who have or experience the following contraindications:
- primary immune deficiency,
- Uncontrolled autoimmune disease
- Gullian Barre Syndrome Disease,
- Mielitis transversa,
- Acute demyelinating encephalomyelitis,
- Cancer children who are undergoing chemotherapy/radiotherapy,
- Children who are receiving severe immunosuppressant/cytostatic treatment,
- Have a fever of 37.50 C or more,
- The child has just recovered from COVID-19 in less than 3 months,
- Other post-immunization less than 1 month,
- Child or adolescent is pregnant,
- Have hypertension and diabetes mellitus, and or chronic diseases or congenital abnormalities that are not controlled.
The recommendation also notes that immunization for children with cancer in the maintenance phase, chronic disease or controlled autoimmune disease can follow general immunization guidelines by consulting the doctor in charge of the patient beforehand.
IDAI also reminded that before and after vaccination all children must wear masks properly, keep a distance, do not crowd, do not travel if it is not essential.

“And that the implementation of immunization follows the policy of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia and can be started after considering the readiness of health workers, facilities, infrastructure and the community,” he added.
Through this recommendation, IDAI also urges all its members to carry out catch-up immunizations and routine immunizations to prevent outbreaks of infectious diseases that can be prevented by immunization in addition to helping to increase the coverage of COVID-19 immunization in children, and that all pediatricians who are members of IDAI are expected to follow the reporting guidelines. immunization and subsequent monitoring that has been issued by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia.
