List of Russian Food and Beverage Companies

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

At least nine company food and drink away from Russia as a result of the sanctions imposed by the US and Western countries against the military invasion of Ukraine.

The list of companies leaving is expected to grow longer as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has not subsided.

Reported from CNN BusinessFriday (11/3), the following is a list of food and beverage companies that have left Russia:

1. McDonald’s

Fast food restaurant McDonald’s has temporarily closed all of its 847 outlets in Russia. “McDonald’s has decided to temporarily close all of our restaurants in Russia and temporarily suspend all operations in the market,” CEO Chris Kempczinski said in a statement.

Globally, most McDonald’s locations are operated by franchise operators. However, in Russia, 84 percent of store locations are operated directly by companies.

According to investor documents, McDonald’s in Russia, along with 108 others in Ukraine, accounted for 9 percent of the company’s revenue last year.

In Russia, McDonald’s employs 62,000 people. The company works with hundreds of local suppliers and partners in Russia to produce food served to customers.

“We serve millions of Russian customers every day who rely on McDonald’s. During the more than 30 years McDonald’s has operated in Russia, we have become an important part of the 850 communities in which we operate,” he said.

Even so, Kempczinski added that companies cannot ignore the human suffering that is happening in Ukraine right now. Therefore, the company decided to temporarily close its outlets.

2. Starbucks

Starbucks suspended all of its business activities in Russia. “Our licensed partners have agreed to immediately cease store operations and will provide support to the nearly 2,000 (employees) in Russia who depend on Starbucks for their livelihoods,” said Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson.

Johnson added that Starbucks also stopped shipping all Starbucks products to Russia.

3. Coke

Coca-Cola on the same day as Starbucks, also canceled its business in Russia. The giant carbonated beverage company has expressed its support for those who are bearing the brunt of the tragic events in Ukraine.

4. Burger King

Burger King decided to leave Russia. Burger King is the most recent restaurant to attract business support in the red bear country.

Restaurant Brands International (RBI), Burger King’s parent company, said it had suspended all of its company’s support in the Russian market, including operations, marketing and supply chain.

The company also halted investment and expansion in the region. Even so, that doesn’t mean Burger King restaurants will close completely in Russia. The reason is, around 800 branches there are fully managed by local main franchisees.

“Burger King Russia is an independent business owned and operated by our franchisee in the country. We have a legal agreement that is not easily changed,” RBI said in a statement.

5. Nestle

Nestle stopped all capital investment in Russia and stopped advertising activity in that country.

However, the world’s largest food and beverage consumer has promised not to withdraw the supply of products from shops in Russia.

“We are working hard to help keep food available to the public, whether it’s on store shelves or through donations of essential food and beverages such as baby food, cereals, soups and noodles to those in need across the region,” the company said.
