List of Countries Allowing Dual Citizenship: Advantages, Disadvantages, and Indonesia’s Restrictions

Jakarta

Dual citizenship is two national identities that a person has. In some countries, this is allowed, here is the list.

People with dual citizenship are citizens of two countries at the same time. They are also called bipatrides. They have the same rights as other citizens, namely paying taxes, receiving social benefits, and receiving pensions in several countries.

The reasons why someone has dual citizenship can vary, ranging from hereditary factors, conditions, to urgent needs.

Dual citizenship can usually only be obtained if both countries have signed a dual citizenship agreement and each party recognizes the rights and obligations of citizens in the other country.

Some of the advantages of dual citizenship are being able to receive the benefits offered by each country, being able to vote, having access to social rights, and getting employment opportunities.

Additionally, those holding dual citizenship have ample travel opportunities. This is because having two passports opens up the opportunity for people to reach countries that cannot be reached with just one passport.

However, having dual citizenship is not free from disadvantages. Launching Immigrant Invest, Wednesday (14/2/2024), here are some of the disadvantages of having dual citizenship.

When holding dual citizenship, a person is at high risk of paying taxes in both countries. For example, in the United States, people who have dual citizenship in Uncle Sam’s country are required to pay double taxes even though they live in another country.

As someone who has dual citizenship, one must also comply with the laws of two countries. In addition, if a conflict occurs between two countries, the choice of one party may result in the loss of citizenship of the second country or even in court.

Apart from that, getting citizenship is not easy and tends to be complicated.

So, which countries allow dual citizenship? So far, 49 percent of countries around the world allow dual citizenship. Here’s the list:
