A total of six national teams have confirmed their passage to the quarter-finals 2023 U-20 Asian Cup after the last match of the group phase, Wednesday (8/3).
Three groups have spent the match in this preliminary round. The teams that qualify for the quarter-finals must be determined in the last game because of the intense competition in this round.
Group C is the latest to spend the match. In this group, South Korea and Jordan qualified for the knockout stages as winners and runners up in the group.
South Korea won Group C after the last match against Tajikistan drew 0-0 at the Milliy Stadium.
The draw made The Taegeuk Warriors collect seven points from three games. Korea’s escape was accompanied by Jordan who also drew 0-0 with Oman at the Lokomotiv Stadium.
Jordan and Tajikistan have the same score, four. However, Jordan has a better head to head goal difference than Tajikistan.
Apart from Group C, two other groups A and B have confirmed their representatives to the quarter-finals on Tuesday (7/3).
In Group A, hosts Uzbekistan and Iraq were the two teams that advanced to the knockout stages. Uzbekistan won the group with a collection of seven points after a 0-0 draw with the U-20 Indonesian National Team in the last match.
Meanwhile, Iraq became the runner up with four points after being held by Syria 1-1. Iraq and Indonesia U-20 both scored four points, but Iraq had a better goal difference.
Vietnam suffered a tragic fate in Group B, which dramatically failed to qualify. Vietnam performed well in the first two matches by beating Australia and Qatar.
However, in the decisive match Vietnam lost on goal difference from Australia who won 9-1 over Qatar. The two representatives from Group B in the quarter-finals of the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup belong to Iran and Australia.
