Lisbon and Tagus Valley with 79% of new infections

Lisbon and Vale do Tejo (LVT) registered today 79% of new cases of covid-19, with 255 of the 323 new infections, with the municipalities of Lisbon, Sintra and Amadora concentrating the biggest increase in the region compared to Friday.

The LVT region had 75.2% of new cases on Friday, 77% on Thursday, 82.2% on Wednesday, 87% on Tuesday, 63.3% on Monday and 77% of new cases released on Sunday.

According to the bulletin on the epidemiological situation in Portugal released today by the Directorate-General for Health, 255 of the new daily infections were reported in the LVT region (79% of cases), with 24 more cases in the Center (7%), in the Algarve another 21 (6.5%).

In Alentejo there were 18 new cases (5.6% of the total) and in the North four new infections (0.1% of cases). In the Autonomous Region of the Azores a new case was reported, while in the Autonomous Region of Madeira there is no record of any new infection.

Of the six deaths recorded today, all occurred in the region of Lisbon and the Tagus Valley.

According to the bulletin, the LVT region has the highest number of accumulated cases, in a total of 18,361, the North region has 17,445, Centro 4,080, Alentejo 467 and the Autonomous Region of the Azores 149 (data from regional entities refer to 151 ).

The Algarve has a total of 595 accumulated cases and the Autonomous Region of Madeira remains with 92.

The municipality of Lisbon continues to have the highest number of daily cases in the region and now has a total of 3,347, 12 more than on Friday, while Sintra has 2,499 infections, 22 more than on Friday.

Also in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, Loures has 1,756 (plus 11), Amadora has 1,601 (plus 10), Odivelas with 1,060, Oeiras with 718 and Seixal with 573 (all with six more cases).

Cascais has 870 cases (two more), Almada 568 (seven more) and Vila Franca de Xira remains with 731.

Of the five counties in the North with the most accumulated cases, only the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia reported a new case since Friday, now with an accumulated total of 1,634.

Porto remains with 1,414, Matosinhos with 1,292. Braga with 1,256 and Gondomar with 1,093.

The Directorate-General for Health stresses that the figures presented refer to the total of medical notifications in the SINAVE system (excluding laboratory notifications), so they may “not correspond to all cases per municipality”.

DGS data indicate 1,561 covid-19-related deaths and 41,189 confirmed cases since the beginning of the pandemic.

In comparison with Friday’s data, today there was a 0.4% increase in deaths. Infection cases rose 0.8%.

Since January 1, Portugal has registered 375,490 suspicious cases, the report says, adding that there are 26,864 people recovered, 231 more than on Friday.

The covid-19 pandemic has killed at least 494,337 people and has infected 9.8 million worldwide since December in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

The disease is spread by a new coronavirus detected in late December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
