Lisa Marie Presley, the only daughter of the legendary Elvis Presley, shared intimate details about her relationship with Michael Jackson in her recent posthumous book, From Here to the Great Unknown.
The work, which was released on October 8, 2024, was completed by her daughter Riley Keough after Lisa Marie’s death in January 2023.
Through its pages, Lisa Marie reveals the complexity and intensity of her bond with the “King of Pop,” a romance that captured the world’s attention and was marked by scrutiny, love and tragedy.
The story between Presley and Jackson began in 1994, when both met again after meeting each other in their childhood.
In his memoirs, he recounted a trip to Las Vegas where the pop star confessed his love for him. “Michael said, ‘I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’m completely in love with you. I want us to get married and have my children,’” she wrote.
This romantic declaration led Lisa Marie Presley to rethink her personal life, resulting in her separation from her first husband, Danny Keough.
The connection between them quickly intensified, culminating in a marriage that surprised both their circles and the general public. The wedding took place on May 26, 1994, just three weeks after Lisa Marie divorced Keough.
Michael Jackson was a virgin when he first married
During their relationship, Lisa Marie remembers that Michael Jackson assured her that he was still a virgin and had had few previous romantic experiences.
“He told me he was still a virgin. I think he had kissed Tatum O’Neal, and he had had something with Brooke Shields, which hadn’t been physical other than a kiss. “He said that Madonna had also tried to hook up with him once, but nothing happened,” he detailed about the “Thriller” singer.
And she confessed: “I was terrified because I didn’t want to take a wrong step.” However, as their romance progressed, tensions began to arise.
Lisa Marie Presley realized that he was dealing with serious personal problems, including possible drug use. Likewise, media pressure played a crucial role in the relationship.
Her daughter Riley Keough commented on how her mother’s life was always under public scrutiny due to her family lineage.
“What she wanted to do in her memoir was go beyond the magazine headline about her and reveal the core of who she was,” he explained to People about From Here to the Great Unknown.
Press pressure on Lisa Marie and Michael intensified after the famous kiss at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1994, a moment that became a symbol of marriage.
Despite the love they shared, differences began to arise. She remembers how Jackson became distant and how she began to notice worrying changes in his behavior.
In her book, she mentions warnings from some members of Jackson’s family about his habits and how she tried to confront him.
“Michael was being really horrible—he got mad at me for asking questions. I said, ‘What’s really going on here? If you have a problem, I will go to rehab with you,’” he said in the book.
The relationship culminated in a painful separation when Lisa Marie filed for divorce in December 1995, and it was formalized in August 1996. “He had wanted me to have his children so much and I didn’t want to,” she concluded.
Despite the tumultuous end, Riley revealed that they continued to have contact after the breakup: “Years later he called my mom, she said he didn’t seem sober. He told him: ‘You were right, everyone around me wants to kill me.’ “It was their last conversation.”
Following the death of Lisa Marie Presley in January 2023 due to complications related to bariatric surgery, actress Riley Keough decided to complete the memoir using recordings left by her mother.
The latter highlighted the importance of the goal behind the book: seeking human connection. “I hope that someone can read their story and identify with it to know that they are not alone in the world,” he said.
