Representatives of the Liquipedia.net portal stated that from November 10, Russian players will be denied their request to change the Russian flag to a neutral one. The reason for this was “false pretenses”. The site administrators shared information about this on their official Twitter page.
According to the portal’s employees, the ability to change the flag gave tournament organizers the right to issue various ultimatums to players. If eSports players did not accept the terms, they could be “publicly shamed or banned from the event.” Some members of the professional scene have also “abused” the ability to change the flag for personal gain.
Thus, professional CS2 player Daniil Porya Poryadin changed his flag to a neutral one on July 28, 2023, but began performing again under the Russian flag on August 3. Over time, the status of the neutral flag was also asked to be removed by the former coach of the OG Dota 2 roster, Evgeny Chuvash Makarov, and the ex-representative of Wildcard Gaming, Egor Ark Zhabotinsky.
Liquipedia noted that they want to provide accurate information to their readers, and because of the above examples, “the purpose of the site was compromised.” The portal staff said that changing the flag is a “complex issue in many respects,” which is why the decision was made to discontinue the possibility of such a procedure.
