LIPI Explain How to Overcome the Sting of a Jellyfish Fire

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

LIPI (Indonesian Institute of Sciences) reveals how first aid can be done to overcome the sting jellyfish api.

According to the Chairperson of the Deep Sea Ecosystem Research Group of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), Hanung Agus Mulyadi, to conduct relief is done by removing all the tentacles stuck in the affected skin.

“It is endeavored that victims affected by jellyfish stings throw tentacles attached to the skin and if there are indications of injury immediately contact the medical authorities,” he explained when contacted on Sunday (12/7).

This was revealed by Hanung related to 25 tourists who were stung by jellyfish while swimming in Pangandaran Beach, Tuesday (7/7).

He suspects that the jellyfish that sting visitors at Pangandaran Beach are a type of fire jellyfish or physalia physalis.

However, some experts call it physalia utriculus, while Australians are familiar with the term Bluebottle.

These jellyfish can sting people because they have nematocyst, in the form of stinger capsules on animals in the form of thorny colenterata.

If nematocyst touch the surface of the skin of people or animals, thorns will stick to make itchy, rashes appear, until there is a feeling like burning.

In addition, Hanung explained that the interesting thing about the jellyfish is to have a balloon on his back that is bluish in color.

“Another interesting thing is that there is a balloon on the upper back which is bluish in color, it is a penumathopore that functions to float,” said Hanung.

He further said that the balloon helped mobilize the jellyfish.

Hanung revealed that a similar jellyfish had been found in Kulon Progo Beach, Special Region of Yogyakarta, so it is very possible that the jellyfish that stung the tourists in Pangandaran Beach were the same jellyfish.

“With the help of wind and oceanographic factors, jellyfish can be carried (currents) up to several kilometers and head towards the beach (Pangandaran) even stranded to the shore,” said Hanung.

The local coast guard explained that visitors of Pangandaran Monitor were often not careful when there were jellyfish. Some visitors even play with the animals.
