Lipavský in the Security Council: We must stop Russia, the Czech Republic also bears the consequences of aggression

Lipavský at the beginning stated, that the Czech Republic has become a temporary home for the largest number of Ukrainian refugees per population. “We are one of the countries that suffered the most from the direct consequences of Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified aggression,” he noted.

He recalled Russia’s “brutal and total” aggression, which began a year ago, and the illegal annexation of Crimea nine years ago. “Russia sees other countries, their freedom, democracy as a mere trophy to satisfy its colonial and imperialist ambitions,” he said.

According to him, the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders is non-negotiable.

He mentioned Russian crimes, including attacks on children, but also reminded that the consequences of Russian aggression are felt by people far beyond the borders of Europe.

He also recalled the suspension of the Russian part of the NEW START agreement and added that for Russian President Vladimir Putin, the escalation of war is a daily bread. “Together we must stop Russia from dragging us into horrors similar to those we remember in the world wars. Together we must defend the UN Charter. We must ensure that responsibility for war crimes is borne according to international law,” said the Czech minister.

Lipavský made a speech before the UN Security Council after five months. At the end of September, he became the first Czech in 30 years to speak at the highest level of the United Nations.
