Lions have torn apart an employee of a private game reserve in South Africa, police said on Saturday. The 21-year-old victim was attacked Thursday afternoon, “in the course of his work”.

When the emergency services arrived, the young woman, victim of multiple injuries, was outside a lion enclosure. She was dead when she arrived at the hospital. An investigation has been opened.

“We are trying to understand what may have happened,” said a police spokesman. “All we know is that she worked and lived there,” on a reserve in Limpopo province.

South Africa has some 8,000 lions raised in pens for hunting, the bone trade, tourism and university research, according to estimates by wildlife advocacy groups. On the other hand, there are only 3000 of these felines in the wild, living in national parks where hunting is prohibited.
