Lions Attack and Kill Man at Gauteng Game Reserve: Shocking Photos Circulate on Social Media

Photos of the mutilated body are circulating on social media. The management of the reserve, which is located in the province of Gauteng about 50 kilometers north of the city of Pretoria, has South African media confirmed that the photos were taken in that natural park. It has also been confirmed that the victim is Johannes Matshe (30), an employee of a local landowner.

Lions possibly killed

According to Hartogh Streicher, spokesman for the park, Matshe was attacked by three lions while walking through the park on foot. His body was discovered the next morning by other park employees.

The spokesman also said Dinokeng Game Enterprises, which owns the wildlife in the reserve, has applied for a permit to kill the three lions. It is not yet certain whether the animals will actually be killed.

“This incident highlights the need for visitors and landowners in the area to always exercise caution when dealing with the reserve’s wildlife,” Streicher said. “If we follow the rules and behave responsibly, we can create a safer environment for everyone.”

The spokesperson also emphatically stated that it is strictly forbidden, both at night and during the day, to enter the reserve on foot.

Big 5

In 2018, a 22-year-old woman was also the victim of an attack by lions in the same reserve. However, it was a lion that was not owned by the park management; that attack also took place in an area that is not accessible to visitors.

The Dinokeng Game Reserve is about 19,000 hectares in size. Visitors can see all the species known as the Big 5: the lion, the leopard, the black rhinoceros, the African bush elephant and the African buffalo.
