Lionel Richie confessed to his fans that he tried to bribe his pilot to get to the show at Madison Square Garden on time.
Last Saturday, Lionel Richie would perform at the legendary Madison Square Garden. Tickets were already sold out and the nearly 20,000 attendees were already in their seats eager to hear hits like Stuck On You, Endless Love and Dancing on the Ceiling. However, just an hour before the show was to start, it was announced that Lionel Richie would not be performing that night at the historic New York venue.
“Due to bad weather and being unable to land in and around New York, I will not be able to attend tonight’s show. I’m very sad. We are rescheduling the show for Monday, August 14. I can’t wait to perform for all of you. Tickets for tonight’s show are valid for Monday’s show, ”wrote the musician on his social media.
Lionel Richie shared a statement last Saturday revealing that he would reschedule his Madison Square Garden concert.
Luckily for the attendees, Richie was able to keep his promise and this Monday he finally arrived at Madison Square Garden to review his musical catalog for almost three hours, but not before apologizing thousands of times to his fans.
Now, new videos of the show have come to light, where Richie shared the curious anecdote of how he tried to convince the pilot to arrive on time for the concert. Unfortunately this was not possible due to bad weather.
“Two ‘No’s’ came at the same time. when those two decided it was a no, when God says no and when the pilot says no, the answer… I tried to bribe the pilot,” Richie told the audience, who laughed when they heard that the musician was willing to risk the lives of the entire crew in order to get to the show on time.

“And the pilot said, ‘I want to see my wife tomorrow.’ So tonight we’re gonna make it up to you. I apologize for that,” stated Lionel, who stood in front of the piano and continued with the concert.
The cancellation of the show last Saturday has already had consequences on Lionel’s current tour. After having to reschedule the concert for Monday, the musician was also forced to reschedule his show in Connecticut, which would take place that same Monday. Now, the show will take place this Wednesday, August 16, only without the presence of Derek Jeter, a New York Yankee player who was going to provide a question and answer session with the public, prior to Richie’s concert. However, with the rescheduling of the show, this will no longer be possible.

The Madison Square Garden incident comes just a few days after Sofia Richie, Lionel Richie’s youngest daughter, shared in an interview the great role model her father has been throughout his 24-year life, especially as a a public figure who, despite the resounding success, has maintained his humility.
“He handles it very elegantly. She hugs everyone who comes near her. She appreciates it, he is grateful. He has taught me never to have that ‘God, not today’ attitude. He’s another level of megastar, and I’ve watched him my whole life. I have never seen him say no to a photo. I have never seen him be rude to anyone who approaches him on the street.”
Sofia married Elliot Grainge, music executive in charge of the 10K Projects record label, which brings together artists such as Tekashi69, Ice Spice, Surfaces and Trippie Redd last April.
