Messi has joined Miami because, according to Jorge Mas, he now has “a chance to change the sport” while turning down “endless money” elsewhere.
Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas has spoken at length on Lionel Messi’s reasons for moving to MLS. The Argentine, who was also in demand at FC Barcelona and in Saudi Arabia after leaving PSG, would have been particularly tempted to change his sport in the USA.
Mas said in the new podcast Offside with Taylor Twellman: “I was in the team building every day and had the chance to talk to Lionel at length. I asked him: ‘What are your goals? What are your dreams?’ And what do you want?’ “We’re fighting here for the best player in the world against the great powers of world football and against infinite amounts of money that we can’t compete with. So I had to find out what makes Lionel Messi tick. What can we offer that others don’t have? In this country had Lionel Messi a chance to change the sport, had he stayed at PSG he wouldn’t have changed the sport, the same goes for a return to Barcelona and if he went to Saudi Arabia he wouldn’t have changed the sport there either .”
Messi made an immediate impression in the States, by scoring five goals in his first three games. Mas added: “Lionel Messi is a competitive beast. The things we’ve seen in just tiny details and examples that he’s done with his teammates in the training center are amazing. We have high expectations. But personally, I’m of what I am in this very short time with him, already blown away.”
