Lionel Messi’s debut for Inter Miami has been given a new kick-off time. The Argentine is expected to make his debut for his new club on July 21. Then it’s up to Miami in the Leagues Cup against Cruz Azul. This game is now the opening game of the young competition. The move forward to a more prominent kick-off time is done so that as many fans as possible in the US and around the world can watch Messi’s first Inter appearance.
Messi decided to move to Miami a few weeks ago after leaving PSG on a free transfer. The 36-year-old is currently on vacation and is due to make his debut in around two weeks.
Inter Miami’s sporting director Chris Henderson said: “Everything is settled with Leo. We’re just doing the paperwork with Major League Soccer, it’s taking time. We’re hoping to have him up and running in mid-late July.” His official presentation as a newcomer is planned for July 16th.
The new Leagues Cup was launched in 2019. It’s about promoting football in North America and Mexico. After initially four teams from MLS and Liga MX took part, now for the first time all 47 teams from the two leagues compete against each other in a format similar to that of the World Cup. The domestic leagues are on hiatus during the competition, which runs from July 21 to August 19 this year. A total of 77 games will be played in stadiums across the US and Canada.
The game between Inter Miami and Cruz Azul will take place at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale (Florida). Kick-off was set for 8 p.m. local time. This corresponds to 2 a.m. Central European Time.
