Lionel Messi would have stayed at Barça under me

Last week, Toni Freixa got involved in FC Barcelona’s affairs. With Victor Font, another former presidential candidate is now following suit and asserting that Lionel Messi would not have left Barça under his patronage.

During an event on Tuesday, Victor Font publicly criticized Joan Laporta, against whom he lost the presidential election at FC Barcelona in spring 2021. It’s obvious that Laporta has no plan to deal with the economic crisis, Font rumbled. The worst financial crisis the club has ever experienced.

Font also questioned that Laporta’s board opted to write off players in the 2020-21 economy course rather than cut spending and player salaries. According to Fonts, this measure contributed to Lionel Messi having to leave FC Barcelona.

Jabs at Barça President Joan Laporta

“I am convinced that Messi would have stayed with me,” Font goes back to voting. On Tuesday, the Barça member presented his “Si al futur” (“Yes to the future”) project, which the club’s board will vote on before the end of the year. During his monologue, Font made a number of verbal attacks on Laporta.

“It’s not about criticizing for the sake of criticism, but it’s clear that there was no plan and that things were improvised. Going to the presidency without a plan worked in the past,” said Font, who predicted the elections in March 2021 lost to Laporta by just 30 percent.

Font also complained that under Laporta, Barça are run like a family business, which means a “lack of professionalism”. Font would have prevented the control committees of the various areas of the association from being headed by “friends of the board”.
