Lionel Messi Turns Down €400m Move to Saudi Arabia for Love of Football, Says Hristo Stoichkov

Lionel Messi has turned down a move to Saudi Arabia because he ‘loves football’, according to Barcelona legend Hristo Stoichkov.

WHAT HAPPENED? Lionel Messi decided against a €400m move to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, instead signing for Inter Miami in MLS. Barça legend Hristo Stoichkov has praised Messi for deciding against the Middle East money and he believes the reason for this is Messi’s love of football.

WHAT WAS SAID? In conversation with Stats Perform Stoichkov said: “We didn’t play for money, we played for love. That shows greatness. I didn’t care what my salary or bonuses were. For me it was more important to play and for people to appreciate me. The agents take care of the other things. Messi comes to compete and play and he doesn’t care about the money because he loves football.”
