The idea that Lionel Messi could play in Europe during the MLS winter break has received intense media attention in recent days. The 36-year-old professional from Inter Miami is now clearly rejecting a temporary return to the old continent.
When asked whether he would use the MLS break for an interlude in Europe, Messi answered a curt and unambiguous “no”. He is therefore not available for a loan deal. This would be possible because the MLS is in season break between the end of December and February. Other stars such as David Beckham and Zlatan Ibrahimovic have used the breaks in the past for temporary engagements with European clubs. Messi will not do this. A return to Barça is also finally off the table.
“I will train, I will play our next match,” says Messi, referring to the last regular season game with Inter Miami against Charlotte FC. “And I’ll try to come to the national team in November in the best condition. After that, I’ll enjoy my vacation in Argentina.” The magic flea missed the playoffs with Miami.
Messi is looking forward to the less intense phase that lies ahead: “It’s the first time that I will have more days off in December, with the holidays, in peace and with my people. In January I will return again to do the pre season. As always, I’m starting from scratch and preparing as best as I can.”
