Inter Miami coach Tata Martino said that Lionel Messi will be the new captain of the competing team in the NBA.
Messi, who joined Inter Miami earlier this month, wore the armband in his first appearance with the team in a match against Cruz Azul in the American-Mexico League Cup last Friday, during which the Argentine striker scored the winning goal 2-1 for Inter Miami in the fourth minute of stoppage time with a wonderful direct free kick.
The former captain of the team, Brazilian midfielder Gregor, faces a long absence due to a foot injury.
In response to a question about whether Messi would continue to lead Inter Miami, Martino told reporters, “In the last match he wore the armband and he will wear it in the coming period.”
“Well, it’s very likely that Leo and Busquets will both play longer,” said Martino. “I even think if they play more we’ll change the dynamic and they’ll probably start from the start. But we all know that when Leo starts, the time we’ll talk about is 90 minutes.”
“But everything will depend on how they feel, it’s only the second match they will play,” added the former Barcelona and Argentina coach.
Inter Miami is looking forward to another help from Messi to overcome Atlanta United tomorrow, Tuesday, to reach the knockout rounds.
