Inter Miami head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino has revealed that superstar Lionel Messi will miss Sunday’s game against Orlando. The coach told reporters on Friday that the Argentine was unfortunately struggling with scar tissue problems. Messi apparently suffered the setback recently in a game against Argentina.
In addition to Messi, Martino claimed that Jordi Alba was also injured. However, the defender complained of muscle pain. The former Barcelona duo recently missed an MLS game against Atlanta. Although they returned to the starting lineup against Toronto on Thursday, both were substituted in the first half of the game.
Trainer claims that the star duo should only take a few days off
“Basically, Leo is still dealing with his old scar tissue and Jordi is dealing with muscle pain,” Martino explained during a press conference on Friday. “They’re both commonplace.”
“The truth is that I haven’t spoken to Leo since the game, but his experience gives him the ability to know, even during a game, when to stop, when to say enough and when to take precautions,” continued Martino continued.
“At this stage in his career it seems very sensible for him to do that more than ever. And I say that on behalf of all of us, because we want to see Leo on the pitch for a long time. It’s good for me that he’s aware of when to stop, like he did in the Ecuador game.”
Messi starred in Argentina’s narrow 1-0 win over Ecuador on September 7. However, the attacker was substituted late in the second half of the World Cup qualifier. He was then left out of his country’s game against Bolivia five days later.
Inter Miami hopes Lionel Messi stays injury-free in the US Open Cup final
Reporters sought clarity on the severity of Messi’s latest injury, but Martino was unable to provide further details. “I’m not a doctor. It bothers him, it doesn’t hurt him. “I don’t know why,” Martino replied.
“It is likely that these scars bother (him) and do not even allow him to be mentally free to play a game. It’s tough. We have all experienced pain from hitting our scars on the corner of a table, and this is how it is.”
Miami will certainly miss Messi in their MLS rival game against Orlando. Still, the US Open Cup final is just a few days away. Houston Dynamo are scheduled to travel to Miami on Wednesday, September 27th to lift the trophy. Inter fans are hoping their star is fit and ready for the big game.
