Video clips released by Italian media show an adult lion walking through the deserted city streets of the Italian city of Ladispoli, near Rome.
The lion has escaped from a local circus. The mayor of the city of more than 40,000, Alessandro Grando, has urged locals to stay indoors as police and circus officials try to catch the predator.
At 21:30 local time last night, more than five hours after his first call for caution, the mayor announced on his personal Facebook page that the lion had been “sedated and captured”.
Grandaud expressed hope that the incident could help “finally put an end to animal exploitation.”
