A lion that escaped from a local circus near the Italian capital Rome was captured last night after roaming the streets of the coastal town of Ladispoli for hours, BTA reported, citing France Press.
The mayor of the Tyrrhenian Sea city of more than 40,000, Alessandro Grando, had urged locals to stay indoors while police and circus officials tried to catch the predator.
Video clips released by Italian media, the authenticity of which AFP has not been able to verify, show an adult lion walking through deserted city streets in the dark. At 9:30 p.m. local time (10:30 p.m. Bulgarian), more than five hours after his first call for increased attention to the citizens of Ladispoli, Mayor Grando assured them on his personal Facebook page that the lion was was “captured and sedated”.
“He is now being cared for by circus staff,” Grandaud wrote, thanking emergency services and volunteers who helped in “these hours of great concern.” The mayor of Ladispoli hopes that public awareness can contribute “to finally put an end to the exploitation of animals”.
