Linz fights with study for its cable car – Upper Austria

Linz does not give up! Because you absolutely want a city cable car, a new study is now being commissioned.

Linz and the dream of Austria’s first urban cable car: In 2017, the idea of a cable car floating through the city of Linz emerged for the first time. The father of the idea was the then infrastructure city council and today’s vice mayor Markus Hein. The plan: The cable car should lead from Ebelsberg to the Linz industrial area at the port.

In 2018 the first plans were presented. The problem: the costs. According to the latest estimates, you should get by with 150 million euros, as Hein opposite “Today” explained.

And because the Green Ministry of Transport around Minister Leonore Gewessler is still reluctant to participate financially, a new study is now needed. “I have the feeling that one is looking for excuses because one always demands proof of the overall effect of the tram and cable car. One has nothing to do with the other,” Hein does not understand the reluctance of the federal government.

A study will therefore be commissioned by the City Senate on Thursday, which will include a passenger analysis (i.e. how many passengers can be expected) and the traffic effectiveness (how does the cable car affect overall traffic in Linz).

And Markus Hein has one more hope. Because Vienna is also considering a cable car, the Linz documents have been released. “We don’t want to hide anything, and maybe it will help Linz if Vienna also builds a cable car,” said Hein.
