Linz: attempted murder charges after a knife attack on his wife

The Linz public prosecutor has filed charges of attempted murder against a 52-year-old who is said to have stabbed his wife in the neck several times with a knife at the end of May. Spokeswoman Ulrike Breiteneder confirmed a report by the APA Crown newspaper. The victim only survived thanks to a string of fortunate circumstances and a few courageous bystanders who stepped in and disabled the Syrian at considerable risk of their own.

Motive: jealousy

The motive for the crime may have been jealousy. The 41-year-old apparently wrote to a friend on her cell phone, her husband wanted to see the phone and she didn’t give it to him. An argument broke out in the couple’s apartment, which later flared up again on the street. The 52-year-old is said to have suddenly stabbed his wife in the neck several times with a carpet knife and injured her life-threateningly.

Nurse and priest stepped in

The investigators assume that the 41-year-old would not have survived if some people had not intervened, all of whom happened to be passing by the scene of the crime: A nurse acted most courageously, jumping in the back of the perpetrator with her legs and ending the attack. A pastor also tried to keep the man away from the woman. The priest was then himself threatened with a knife, fell and was slightly injured.
