Linz am Rhein Wins Smart City Project Tender for People Counting Pilot

[26.4.2023] The city of Linz am Rhein has now won the tender for smart city projects for the Mittelrhein energy supply. The Rhineland-Palatinate municipality now wants to use this for a pilot project to count people in the city centre.

Energieversorgung Mittelrhein (evm) now accompanies and supports the city of Linz am Rhein on its way to becoming a smart municipality. As evm reports, the reason for this was the evm tender for smart pioneers for the award of several pilot projects, in which the municipality located in the district of Neuwied in the north of Rhineland-Palatinate participated and won. Given the wide range of options for using intelligent smart city applications, Linz decided to count people in the city center. For this purpose, a sensor will be installed in each of Rheinstraße and Mittelstraße, which is able to anonymously record the end devices of passers-by in the area. This is done by the lunchbox-sized boxes installed on the wall of the house looking for open WLAN connections. “With the census, we want to gather insights that can help us revitalize our inner city. For example, for Sunday shopping or events,” says Karin Wessel, City Manager of the City of Linz am Rhein.
According to evm, the collected data travels from the city center to the actual heart of the smart city technology: the Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) radio antenna at the historic town hall. The antenna is installed in the bell tower and from there it can be connected to numerous other sensors in the future in order to integrate further application options.
The city does not want to miss this opportunity, because the projects are big: Linz am Rhein is a nationwide model region, funded by the Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Building and the Reconstruction Loan Corporation. The conception phase is running at full speed, as the city manager and project manager of the funding project explains: “We want to look forward to a sustainable and livable future with satisfied residents. Together with the citizens, council members and local businesses, we exchanged ideas in workshops and developed ideas as to what the future of the smart Linz region could look like.” A comprehensive strategy document is currently being drawn up for this purpose.
