Linz: 6,500 apartments in the “pipeline”

14

In the past ten years, around 10,500 new apartments have been built in Linz, more than 80 percent of them in completely new buildings. In a three-year comparison, the number of apartments has risen from 116,000 at the beginning of 2019 to a historic high of 120,928 (as of January 18, 2023).

This brisk residential building activity in recent years is offset by very high demand. More than half of the 50,000 people looking for housing in Upper Austria would like to move to Linz, many of them for reasons of urgency. These include people who start a household, who have children or who have separated, as well as older people who are moving back to the city for better care. The main reason for the continued high demand is probably the job offer in central Upper Austria.

“Linz is an attractive city and attracts many people because of its urban charm and what it has to offer. There is a good infrastructure, older people are cared for in senior centers and medical facilities. The desire to come to Linz naturally brings with it a constantly high demand for places to live. In view of this, the city of Linz is primarily focusing on social housing in order to keep prices on the housing market stable and affordable for the people of Linz,” says planning officer City Councilor Dietmar Prammer.
