Do you have an old generation electric meter? Bad news: you will have to pay if you refuse to replace it with a Linky meter. This is what the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) is considering by August 2025. Our electricity comparator returns to the subject!
Additional fees to cover the cost of old meters
The Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) announced this Thursday, October 17: if your home is equipped with a old generation meteryou will have to pay additional fees next year. This proposal was made during a consultation on the future tariff for the use of electricity networks for the period 2025-2028.
In fact, having an old generation meter generates costsparticularly at the level:
- The manager’s information system;
- Relief on foot;
- Controls;
- Additional customer contacts.
Pour compensate these coststhe CRE therefore wishes to invoice the 2.1 million French people which are still not equipped with a Linky meter in their accommodation.
A bill that could increase by up to €66 per year
If the CRE’s proposal is accepted, users not equipped with a Linky meter (except those for whom installation is impossible due to Enedis) will have to pay €6.93 every two monthseither €41.59 per year. And this, from August 1, 2025. For those who do not communicate their consumption index to Enedis or who do not make an appointment to do so, the amount will increase by 4,18 € every two months, i.e. €66.66 per year.
Until now, households with an old meter could avoid paying additional fees by sending their meter readings themselves at least once a year. But with this proposal from the CRE, you will no longer be able to escape it: you will have to have a Linky meter installed.
