LinkedIn and Reddit stop secretly copying iOS clipboard

That is what LinkedIn and Reddit promise against respectively The Verge in ZDNet. Last week, it was revealed that a series of iOS apps are silently inspecting and copying the users’ clipboard.

That was revealed by the first beta version of iOS 14, in which users receive more privacy warnings. For many apps, iOS 14 notifies you that the clipboard is being copied a few times per second.

No espionage, but a mistake

Like TikTok LinkedIn and Reddit say that reading the clipboard was no way to sneakily spy on users. In both cases, the clipboard contents were not sent to the company’s servers or saved by the app.

Reddit is a feature where the app searches the user’s clipboard for a Reddit URL. If it is present, the app asks if the user wants to go directly to that page. LinkedIn compares what users type with what is on their clipboard.

Reddit will release an update for its iOS app on July 14 that will disable copying behavior. The LinkedIn app is also being updated, it is not yet known exactly when.
