Jakarta –
It was thought that the flu would not go away, but it turns out that this man has advanced throat cancer, which was triggered by the human papilloma virus (HPV) after having oral sex. He never thought he would experience it because he felt fit because he often cycled.
The diagnosis of throat cancer was only discovered when a man named Steve Bergman’s 56th birthday. He admitted that he was shocked and thought the trigger was smoking, drinking alcohol, and exposure to chemicals.
“It turned out that all of this had nothing to do with it,” he told Metro, quoted on Saturday (29/7/2023).
However, a series of tests showed that the HPV cancer he had spread through oral sex. HPV includes a group of more than 200 viruses that, according to the National Cancer Institute, are common in both men and women. As a percentage, it is more reported in men.
Most HPV don’t cause any problems, but some cases lead to cancer, affecting the cervix, throat, anus, penis, vagina, and vulva.
The CDC recommends that all children ages 11 to 12 get the HPV vaccine, and it is hoped that vaccination will one day eradicate high-risk strains of HPV.
Before his cancer diagnosis came out in May 2015, Bergman had been complaining of a cold that wouldn’t go away, coupled with pain in the side of his neck.
“A sore throat that doesn’t go away is a symptom of throat cancer,” according to the American Cancer Society.
He was sent to a specialist who put a camera down his throat and found cancer in his tonsils.
“I really felt numb,” he said.
