A lineman who worked for the Matanzas Electrical Company died at the beginning of the month while recovering from an accident that occurred in February, when he fell from the top of an electrical substation.
The man was identified as Daniel Vega de la Cruz, 47 years old, who reportedly lost his life during the early hours of March 2 due to deep vein thrombosis. This type of blood clot formed while the lineman was recovering from the injuries he suffered on February 6.
According to the official newspaper Gironthe lineman went to the substation located in San Juan, near the main city of Matanzas, to carry out routine maintenance work, but ended up falling from a height and suffering fractures in his hip and left femur.
The aforementioned media indicates that an electric power supply cable had broken, it fed the turbines installed in the wells to pump drinking water from the San Juan and Bello springs, in El Naranjal, so the water supply in several areas had been interrupted.
During an interview carried out three days before he died, the lineman indicated that early that day he and other workers were trying to connect the cable to the electrical system, but it grounded, and they had to climb to the top to investigate the cause of the problem.
“I climbed with the means of protection, but one of the corners of that structure, to which the seat belt had been attached, broke due to the years of permanence in the place. I collapsed, my left femur and hip were fractured, even the helmet I was wearing on my head broke in two,” he declared.
Vega said he had never suffered an accident like that before, indicating that he used to insistently remind his colleagues to wear all their protective equipment.
“It is, as I say, our life insurance,” he added, explaining that, since it was dark, they did not notice the poor condition of the metal in that part.
After being rushed to the ‘Faustino Pérez’ Hospital, he underwent operations on the femur and hip. This went well, but the complications that arose a month later ended up ending his life.
It is important to note that, although the accident occurred in February, no state media had reported this, something common due to the strong censorship that the regime maintains on the press on the Island. Likewise, while the death occurred at the beginning of the month , the official media decided to report on it almost 10 days later.
