Jesse Lingard has revealed that an argument with England boss Gareth Southgate led him to move to West Ham on loan in January.
Lingard he was in disgrace at Manchester United having played just three games in the first half of the season. Neither of them were in the league, with the attacker delivered just two League Cup outings and one FA Cup appearance. As a result, he traded Old Trafford for London Stadium in the winter transfer window.
The move has worked well so far, and Lingard quickly settled in the capital. He has scored five goals and assisted two in his seven games with the Hammers so far.
That form has seen him rewarded with a reminder to the England squad. He is part of the 26-man Three Lions team for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. It means that he could win his first international matches since June 2019.
And Lingard has revealed that the man who will train him in England continued to advise him even when he was not being selected.
As reported by PA, Lingard said: “He has shown a lot of support and a lot of confidence in me. He was the first to give me my England debut, of which I am proud. I kept in touch with him even though he wasn’t playing just to get his advice on what I should do.
“We kept talking and then the loan happened, so I didn’t talk to him after the loan. It was just about him working hard for West Ham and trying to get the call.
“I had been away for two years and had not played much football, so it was in my head that I could go or not. But I’m glad I’m here now and that he has shown that faith in me. “
England will play three games in the space of just six days. They will face San Marino on Thursday before a meeting with Albania on Sunday. Their last match before the players return to their clubs will be against Poland next Wednesday.
Recommended stay at Southgate in the Premier League
In considering his options in January, Lingard had the option of moving abroad to have some time to play. However, he chose to stay in his homeland and move into the high-flying home of David Moyes. Hammers.
And it turns out that Southgate was also involved in that decision.
“Actually, it was the right move,” Lingard said of advice from the head of England.
“It was about going to Europe or staying in the Premier League and he said, ‘If I were you I would stay in the Premier League.’
“So after that I had to find a Premier League team and obviously West Ham was a perfect fit.”
Lingard did not elaborate on who else showed interest, but did reveal: “A couple of teams in Spain, France. Then obviously, as I say, I had the conversation with Gareth and he said, ‘If I were you, I’d stay in the Premier League.’
It remains to be decided where Lingard will be next year. Moyes admits that the talks have yet to take place., although the situation will be addressed in time.
