Another rival of Linette was 37-year-old Czech Strycova. An experienced competitor in 2019 was able to reach the semi-finals of Wimbledon. Two years ago, however, she decided to end her career. While out of the game, she gave birth to a son. In April, she decided to return to competing in the WTA series. It is currently ranked 623 in the world ranking.

The first set of the meeting was even, but also very nervous. Both players played in waves, intertwining good plays with weaker ones. In the third game, Linette had her first problems. The Poznań player had to defend the break point three times, until the rival finally scored a break. Thanks to several successful exchanges, our player managed to make up for the losses in the next game.

Linette did not slow down. Playing aggressively and almost flawlessly, she won point after point. After another break, she led 4: 2 and served. Unfortunately, instead of following the blow, the Polish woman made a few simple mistakes and gave up again.

This was not the end of the mood swings in this set. Fortunately, in his decisive moments, the Polish woman kept her cool. Leading 5:4, Linette broke her opponent to zero and could enjoy the winning game.

A tight fight in the second set

At the beginning of the second set, both players continued to play very unevenly. First, the Polish player lost the game on her serve, after a while it was the Czech who was broken.

Later, Linette regained her rhythm and scored confidently on her own serve. In turn, Strycova was terribly tired at times, but she was able to get out of trouble, defending the next break points.

The rivals fought with full commitment, and the exchanges were at a very good level. Nobody wanted to let go. A tie-break would ultimately decide the winner of the game. In it, Strycova kept more cold blood, who after an extremely nervous game won 8-6. Earlier, the Polish woman had a matchball, but the passing of the rival was flawless.

Linette may have felt disappointed, but she did not break down after this failure. The Polish woman started the third part of the spectacle with spirit. She served very well and scored confidently on her serve. In addition, playing precisely from the depths of the court, she broke her rival in the 3rd game. The Polish woman was leading 3:1. That break turned out to be crucial, because Linette did not allow her rival to return to the game until the end of the set. The Polish woman won the decisive set 6:3. The match lasted over three hours.

Linette will play in the third round for the third time in her career (2019 and 2021). There she will face Belinda Bencic, who defeated Danielle Collins and will try for her best result at Wimbledon. The match will take place on Friday, as the third in a row, on court 14.
